eMsika

Agriculture e-commerce in Zambia

Business & Impact

Founded in October 2016, eMsika is an agricultural e-commerce platform that connects farmers and suppliers in Zambia to provide them with greater accessibility to agricultural inputs (seeds, fertiliser, pesticide) and farming machinery. Through the platform, eMsika also reduces price exploitation by local resellers, who often charge farmers a near 100% markup on agricultural inputs. Farmers are thus be able to save time, money and effort in acquiring the inputs crucial to their livelihood.

The Challenge

With business on the uptick, eMsika was looking to expand across Lusaka and the eastern and western provinces of Zambia. eMsika was looking for potential investors to support their efforts in scaling their business. eMsika thus engaged BfE to source for potential investors, perform financial projections and sensitivity analysis, as well as refine their pitch deck.

Deliverables from BfE Singapore

  • Financial Projections and Sensitivity Analysis: We provided market sizing, financial projections for expansion plans, and financial target (revenue, farmer outreach, supplier outreach) estimates.
  • Investor Profile Deck: We provided a list of potential investors eMsika could approach, while prioritising them by relevance according to a set of criteria (industry, past deals, ticket size, etc.)
  • Pitch Deck: We refined a pitch deck to include components which would be of importance to investors (e.g. investment highlights, updated financials).

An exciting opportunity and unique challenge

Midway through the Finance Advisory engagement, a potential investor approached eMsika, offering them capital for a stake in the company. In fact, the investor had interest to further invest in future fundraising rounds, showing a willingness to work with eMsika for 8 years before exit. eMsika approached BfE for advice with a quick turnaround time of 1-week. Despite the short deadline, the team responded with a few key documents:

  • Capitalisation Table: Scenario analysis of changes to shareholder structure after addition of new equity investor, founders’ stake dilution, ESOP considerations
  • Profile Deck: Description of the investor and their relevant past investments
