Alternative Waste Technologies (AWT) is an alternative energy producer based in Kenya. Founded in 2015, the company is a supplier of fuel briquettes. In a production facility in Kajiado, south of Nairobi, organic and charcoal waste is converted into low-cost and eco-friendly fuel briquettes.

The briquettes are a lower cost and more environmentally friendly option compared to charcoal and firewood.

In addition, AWT aims to create meaningful employment for at-risk youth. Through its work-study programme, it hopes to cultivate skills which will propel local youth to earn professional certifications and jobs.

The Challenge

While AWT was doing well in its business of supplying briquettes to the local area, it required advisory services in two key aspects. Firstly, they wanted to market their products better and increase publicity efforts. Secondly, they wanted to expand their operations beyond Kajiado but were unsure on how to proceed.

Deliverables from BfE Singapore

  • Marketing Plan: Analysed marketing channels and preferences of AWT’s main clientele. Developed a marketing plan which encompassed the 4Ps (product, price, place and promotion) tailored for the local market.
  • Expansion Plan: Analysed organic and inorganic growth strategies and its suitability. Proposed a franchise business model which will allow AWT to meet both its financial and impact objectives.
  • Financial Projections: To validate the marketing and expansion plan, preliminary financial projections were conducted to project marketing budget, expansion into various sub-counties, and sales growth.

Impact Measurement: You can’t manage what you can’t measure

At the heart of AWT’s mission was to create a twofold impact: firstly, to supply a more environmentally friendly alternative to current fuel options, and secondly, to provide meaningful employment for at-risk youth. While this was beyond the project’s initial scope, the BfE team developed an impact measurement tool for AWT to track how well it faired on these fronts.

The measurements were mapped to the UN Sustainable Development Goals to promote alignment with global targets of development. In addition, the BfE team drafted a career progression pathway for AWT’s employees to facilitate its goal of generating meaningful employment.
