ABOUT US
The BfE Cambridge Chapter was founded in Autumn 2015 at the University of Cambridge, born from a trip to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. That year, founders Shaun Teo and Tanya Chiaranussati travelled there to help lead a social entrepreneurship programme for East African startups. What they saw firsthand was the remarkable potential of social entrepreneurs to build grassroots solutions to local problems, but also the very real barriers standing in their way, from limited resources to restricted access to funding. Determined to close that gap, they founded BfE with a dual mission: to help local entrepreneurs grow their impact and become investor-ready, and to give students a way to connect meaningful career success with real-world change.
More than ten years on, BfE Cambridge has grown well beyond that original vision. The chapter has partnered with over 100 students across a wide range of disciplines and dozens of dedicated entrepreneurs worldwide, while building lasting partnerships across the social impact ecosystem. Originally working through external student consulting societies to connect with BfE clients, the chapter evolved in 2018 into a full-suite internal model — now offering advisory services directly to social entrepreneurs, backed by additional programme teams that keep the chapter running.
