Bridges for Enterprise
🚀 BfE Briefs, Vol. #15
Welcome to the September BfE newsletter! 🎉

Dear BfE family,

I hope this newsletter finds you doing well! Summer days have ended and we're finally heading back into the school year. For BfE chapters, this kickstarts an exciting time for many students and a great opportunity to support passionate and inspiring social entrepreneurs around the world. With 10 social enterprises beginning their Incubation Programme journey with us this term, I couldn't be more excited to see the types of deliverables that will be produced to support their growth trajectories. A big shoutout and note of gratitude to the amazing students and professional mentors who are spending time to make this all happen. đź‘Ź

At the global level, it's been a summer full of focusing on internal operations to better stabilize our efforts over the long-term. We're very excited to welcome new BfE members across various roles, and look forward to continuing to fill vacancies that add value to keep our impact engine oiled and running smoothly. I hope to share more details about some exciting pending changes to our operational model over the next few months. đź‘€

Until then, please don't hesitate to contact me if there's anything I can do to support you. Be well and take care!

With lots of gratitude,

Jordan

🌍 Global Updates

We've continued to make steady progress on various initiatives at the global level. Here's what each division was up to:

đź“Š Incubation

  • Diagnostic Phase: Richa (Global Consulting Manager) has been leading efforts to collect feedback from stakeholders in the Diagnostic Phase Pilot. We are undergoing discussions with the global team regarding strategies to systematically integrate the Diagnostic Phase into the Incubation Programme.
  • BfE Academy: We are thrilled to welcome Dennis (Global Academy Volunteer) to the team. Dennis will work closely with Arnas, our Global Academy Manager, on building up the academy resources for student associates. Dennis is from Nairobi, Kenya, and has work experience creating education programmes for professional workforce development.
  • Cambridge Leadership: Albert (Global Technical Advisory Manager) has led discussions with the Cambridge Chapter leadership on how to retain manpower for the director role and recruit associates for the coming term.

🤝 Outreach

  • Communications: The Global Communications division is working on case studies of startups from different chapters: New York (NY): Alkyl Recycling (Kenya), Singapore (SG): E&L Suppliers (Malawi), as they wait to confirm the case studies from the other chapters.

🔋 Strategy & Operations

  • Strategy:
    • Chapter Manager Search: We are looking to onboard a new Chapter Manager to begin transitioning to the Platform model by December 2022.
    • New Chapter Handbook: A portion of the handbook has been socialized to Chapter Leadership but it still requires finalisation.
    • BfE Platform Model: The BfE’s Platform Model is making progress, with materials prepared by Annie (Global Strategy Head) & Erika (Global Strategy Manager)! More information on the strategy to come soon! Thank you to Erika Oshima for driving this forward!
    • Talent Onboarding: The team recruited and onboarded a new Talent Volunteer! Welcome Nnenna Nick-Obiegbu.
  • Operations:

👩‍💻 Impact Research

  • BfE Impact Wheel: We are continuing to gather responses for the BfE Impact Wheel database and have distributed them to the most recent startup cohorts. BfE Impact Wheel will collect impact metrics across our client population and help us construct a holistic view of the progress of  both startups’ impact as well as BfE’s.
  • Impact Dashboard: Impact Research is also planning to collaborate with BfE Tech to develop an impact dashboard where we can visualize the results from our post-engagement surveys.

⚙️ Technology

  • The Cyber Security (Technology Support) team is working on migrating all BfE members’ accounts from Google admin to Azure (the cloud service provided by Microsoft). Once complete, we can just rely on Azure AD to authenticate users across most of the applications in the BfE tech stack, including our future Intranet. This is a long term process and we have broken it to 4 major steps:

a. Standardise and test the account migration process

b. Migrate all Global Managers from BfE Tech division to Azure

c. Migrate all members in BfE Tech division to Azure

d. Migrate all BfE members to Azure, and ask GMs and chapter directors to track the progression so that we can ensure all members are on-boarded

  • Step a and b are complete. Each member has to create an Azure account by themselves. The Cyber team has already prepared a documentation to provide a detailed step-by-step guidance to create Azure accounts, and all Tech Global Managers (GMs) have already created their accounts based on this guidance. Big thanks to Chandan (Global Cyber Security Manager) and his team on this! We will follow up with more details within a few weeks time on what other BfE members need to do in order to finish the migration.
  • It’s our pleasure to welcome Lillya (Global Tech Talent Volunteer) to BfE Tech as the Tech Talent Management volunteer. Lillya has over 15 years of experience in recruiting globally distributed teams, building and maintaining candidate relationships to keep a consistent talent pipeline. Lillya will be working closely with Hesam (Global Tech Talent Manager) to review and refine the talent recruitment and engagement strategy of BfE Tech, simplifying and integrating the processes further.
  • Shoutout to Aliyah (Global Tech Talent Volunteer) for completing the collating and transcribing of BfE Tech’s onboarding deck slides speakers’ notes. This is especially helpful for all Tech GMs conducting the onboarding of new members and provides a single source of truth for latest Tech GM updates. Thank you Aliyah for your hard work on maintaining this deck and script!
